Shaking video presentation by University of Chieti – Pescara

Two members of our team have been interviewed to talk about Shaking, our company and a spin-off of the University G. D’Annunzio of Chieti. Click here to check out the full video.

Below you can find the English translation of the text in the video:

“Shaking is a spin-off of the University of D’Annunzio Chieti Pescara, founded in 2023. The spin-off’s mission is the development and application and technology transfer of cutting-edge analysis strategies, procedures, and methods for assessing earthquake hazard, both from ground shaking and surface faulting hazard.
The innovative methodological and technological component of the spin-off consists of new numerical codes and the modernization of the existing ones for the characterization of earthquake sources and for probabilistic analysis of seismic hazard from ground shaking and surface faulting hazard.
The spin-off’s activity primarily focuses on estimating the seismic hazard of sites and infrastructures of strategic importance, such as power plants, industrial and emergency management infrastructures, transportation lifelines, all in support of seismic risk mitigation strategies.”Shaking is a spin-off of the University of D’Annunzio Chieti Pescara, founded in 2023.
The spin-off’s mission is the development and application and technology transfer of cutting-edge analysis strategies, procedures, and methods for assessing earthquake hazard, both from ground shaking and surface faulting hazard.
The innovative methodological and technological component of the spin-off consists of new numerical codes and the modernization of the existing ones for the parameterization of earthquake sources and for probabilistic analysis of seismic hazard from ground shaking and surface faulting hazard.
The spin-off’s activity primarily focuses on estimating the seismic hazard of sites and infrastructures of strategic importance, such as power plants, industrial and emergency management infrastructures, transportation lifelines, all in support of seismic risk mitigation strategies.

The main innovative element of our spin-off is the assessment of surface faulting hazard. This phenomenon is caused by a strong earthquake following a rupture of the Earth’s crust that can propagate to the surface along a discontinuity plane called a fault, displacing the topographic surface. The displacement of the topographic surface can cause damage to infrastructure and buildings located near the fault trace, even if they are designed to withstand seismic shaking. To address this issue, we propose a multi-method approach in three phases: a first phase of data acquisition on the field for the characterization of hazardous faults, a second phase of data processing to estimate the probability of occurrence of the phenomenon and its size at the infrastructure site, and finally a phase of visualization of results in terms of hazard maps and curves.

The spin-off essentially applies the same procedure for seismic hazard assessments from ground shaking.
Shaking targets energy production companies for the security of their infrastructures, engineering companies, insurance companies working in the field of natural risks, national or local authorities responsible for seismic risk mitigation policies.
For these bodies, the spin-off can perform various activities, such as specific seismic hazard assessments using our own methodological approach and numerical codes, reviewing or modernizing of existing assessments, developing of specific procedures and numerical codes, as well as providing technician training and technology transfer. The team and all shaking activities can be consulted on the shaking-srl.it website.”
